Bernadette--as for the baby, he is just a big boy. Usually when babies are so big, they tend to not a have a growth spurt later on and then they even out with other kids their age. Andrew is pretty average size and Daniel is a little on the small side, although not by much.
As for dogs, I would suggest doing what you said and just finding the right dog by personality. When you go to the SPCA you can play with the dogs there, take them for walks, etc. Find one you love and get him/her. Purebreds are fine but it is cheaper to go through the SPCA and you never know if a purebred is coming out of a puppy mill. Also, each type of dog has its own set of problems and often when you get a mix, you get all the good qualities and less of the bad (such as health problems). Are you familiar with the website for pets? It is http://findpets.org/
You can look by breed, location, size, age etc. You can see pictures of dogs at different SPCA's in your area and get an idea of where there might be a dog looking for a home.
Dave took our car to the dealership at 8am. They told him the other day it would take only about an hour. He's been there over 2 and a half. I told him before he left that I should follow him there and drive him home but he said he would wait there. Now he's been gone all morning. Grr...
